Course Content

This short training course (duration of 4 hours) is based on years of experience stemming from R&D in the fields of sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, geochemistry, and uncertainty focusing on innovative technology in subsurface exploration and sustainable energy.

The objective of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to integrated modeling of sedimentary basins. This will be achieved through the application of an original, consolidated workflow consisting of source to sink stratigraphic forward simulations, thermal/burial simulations, and uncertainty analysis. We will demonstrate how these various simulations are linked together and the effective impact of the tailored workflow in producing reasonable multi-scenario simulations and probabilistic information that are critical for decision-making and de-risking subsurface exploration.

The course will cover fundamental concepts through a mix of theoretical knowledge, hand-on sessions, and case studies. The delivery method of this course is centered on interactive learning group activities with a minimum amount of lecturing and efficient walk through the workflow.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Getting familiarized with the principles and applications of stratigraphic forward modeling, thermal/burial modeling, and uncertainty analysis.
  2. Developing and interpreting basic stratigraphic forward models.
  3. Constructing and calibrating thermal/burial models.
  4. Integrating stratigraphic and thermal basin models.
  5. Analyzing uncertainty of the modeling results, providing feedback for the decision-making and de-risking subsurface exploration

Instructor

Alina-Berenice Christ

Alina-Berenice Christ is a Geological Modeling Engineer with over 10 years’ experience working since 2017 at IFP Energies nouvelles and formerly at slb. After obtaining a MSc in geology in Germany and gaining professional experience in Norway and France, Alina enjoys working in an international environment with multi-disciplinary teams. With a strong technical background in geology and cross disciplinary understanding, she specializes in stratigraphic forward modeling, basin modeling and reservoir modeling.

She has experience working in various geological contexts (pre-salt, marine, lacustrine) from various prospects in France, Germany, Norway, Greece, and Brazil. With a background in hydrocarbon exploration, she now focusses mainly on energy transition projects for CCUS and geothermal energy. She also applies her geological knowledge to prototype machine learning applications for well log data interpretation.
