Geology of Early Cretaceous and Jurassic Mixed Plays in Central Tunisia: Petroleum Systems, Reservoirs Behavior and Trap Types
Thursday, 2 October – Saturday, 4 October 2025, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | Tunis, Tunisia
Course Content
This field trip is an overview of the Jurassic & Early Cretaceous plays in the foreland of the Atlas system in the Central Tunisia (Pelagian basin). In order to get a deep insight about the reservoir geology of clastic, carbonate and mixed systems, the impact of natural fracturing on tight reservoir behavior and the characterization of the intra-Jurassic source rocks and hydrocarbon migration pathways we selected the most spectacular outcrops along the Meloussi anticlinorium and NS Axis ridge in Central Tunisia. Subsurface analogues and trapping mechanisms in relation with the tectonic styles and salt tectonics will be discussed.
We will focus on Early Cretaceous marine and fluvio-deltaic Meloussi mixed reservoirs and the configuration model of the Jurassic carbonate platforms and basins that impact reservoir development as well as source occurrences in relation with the domains of possible maturation, migration and accumulation of Hydrocarbons.
In the last day, we will visit the, Sidi El Kilani oil field and the existing surface facilities. The opportunity to explore the untapped deep Jurassic target in this field will be discussed. The rest of the day will be dedicated to the Archaeological Museum of El-Jem.
