Who Should Attend

Geologists, Geophysicists, Reservoir Engineers

Course Content

This short course will comprise lectures, short exercises and discussion sessions. The course will focus on a number of case studies that link outcrop and subsurface geology and have relevance to petroleum exploration and production. Case studies range from Silurian to Miocene in age and come from North African and Mediterranean Basins. The course builds on basic knowledge of sedimentary geology but does not require specialist skills from participants.

The concepts and techniques learned in the course are applied to real industry examples in exercises and short courses. The short course sessions will involve the use of seismic sections, well data and regional geological data.

The focus of this short course is centered around the applications of sequence stratigraphy to actual subsurface data sets gathered into a series of well-founded exercises. The below topics will be briefly presented and more time will be devoted to exercises and discussions.

  • Sequence stratigraphy concepts
  • Sequence stratigraphic surfaces
  • Systems tracts
  • Para-sequences and their stacking patterns
  • Relationship of stratigraphic patterns to changes in subsidence, sedimentation rates and sea level
  • Sequence stratigraphic models
  • Application to oil industry (exploration and production case history and strategies).
